Make good use of our public library. Tons of good books there.
If you are interested in keeping one for yourself for ready reference, I would recommend the National Geographics Field Guide. Then again, it depends on the types of photogrpahic you want to excel in: protraits, wildlife, nude.... (if the latter, good copies of Penthouse, OUI.... might do just fine, hehehe).
