what kind of camera you are using, if you are using eos 300D or 350D, the CMOS size is 1.6x, that means the focal length of the standard lenses, say 50 1.4 and 50 1.8 is 80mm, that is good for shooting portrait. As to the performance of 50 1.8, that is great considering its price. But 135 2.0L is excellent and i use it for portrait very often.

go for it considering its price, the new 50 1.8 is around $700 only.
