I've been using Canon Powershot S50, it's a good one except the lag is long when i try to take pics of kids and my pet. I am thinking something like Canon 350D (as the battery of S50 and 350D is the same)

After reading articles on DSLR compare with compact D.C, I think I would like a 350D rather than upgrade to S70. But I know that DSLR doesn't show image in LCD before the pic is taken and has to use viewfinder. I am not sure if it's good for me while I try to take pic of kids and pets (mostly moving objects)

Please give me some opinions la :)

Does S50 have a viewfinder? If yes, you can try to turn off the LCD and just use the vf to take photo. I think the problem may not as trouble as you expected since the DSLR has a fast reaction time and foucs time. But I would like to remind you the DOF is not as same as DC accroding to larger CCD/CMOS size.
I am using D70 and always take some sports event.

I can't see what will be the problem of using viewfinder.

Before DC time, all cameras use viewfinder, it should work prefectly fine.

Allansky, what's DOF?
As using my S50 for my second year, I hardly use the VF because i make adjustment on the photo quality from the LCD before i take photo in differnet situation. From the LCD, at least i can tell whehter my white balance is correct and the light explosure is in right form (I know there are differences when seeing through LCD and the real pics).

If I switch to DSLR, i may still need to make adjustment before i take the photo, right? even through the much smaller VF compare to LCD mon.

But i am thinking seriously on switching to DSLR in later this year or next year.

first of all, i don't think you should buy 350D, because of the existing battery... it's just so minor...
by using the viewfinder, you may not be able to shot certain angles so easily as you can do with an lcd, but the new handy 350D is still good enough to replace your old model with its extremely fast response and excellent quality of photo...
all in all, go ahead for this upgrade !!!

Thanks for your opinion Manho, if you were me, having two choices let's say, you would go for 350D or S70?

I envy the power of the 350D as one of my classmates used it. Sometimes i found it difficult to take pic of my hamster (consider small and move fast) with my S50.

s70... the selling point for this model, in my mind, is 28mm wide... that's not you are looking for, and the ccd size is even the same, so in the other way, you down graded a bit for the quality in term of extra 2m pixel...

i know clearly that it is not a small step from dc to dslr, it is really two different stories... but the point is, you can have many better choices than this not too hot s70...

if you don't usually print larger than 12r, i am sure any new and popular 5m pixel models will be great to you......

Manho, do you sugguest that I should stay with Compact D.C instead of DSLR? I visited Canon store last week. I really need to learn more DSLR as it took me more than two mins to find out where the switch on and off button is =.=

As i had also tried 20D, but once i picked it up, i don't like the the "hand feel" at all. It's also too heavy for me. I've got a pair small hands.

Besides, I want to know the lens more. The standard len is something like 18-55, what's that means in terms of zooming? And if i just buy the body, do they provide a front cover (in front of the lens cap)?

i can not give suggestion because i know just too little about you... so you are the right, and the only, person to make this final decision, what we can do is to help you...

since you don't know much about dslr, 350D is the best for beginners, and as we have mentioned, this up to now the most handy model will be suitable...

and the zoom range, i may simply say that this standard range can handle your lively hamster, for moving subject, what you need is high shutter speed and this kit can be great...

all in all, if $7k is ok for you, then go ahead... if you want to spend less, name us some dc's and ask for opinion......

just curious, some people in the forum said that the standard kit 350D provide isn't good and go for other brand for better quality. Is it worth?

would you please tell me the range of the standard lens is in terms of the optical zoom? I want to get the idea how wide and how far the standard len provide.

After surfing at the forum, DSLR should be something i have in next step. For those who have DSLR, can any of you tell me (generally) what's the differences in terms of pic quality between DSLR and a normal D.C? Let's both of them are 5.0 mega pixel.

i don't think it is a good idea to suggest a newbee to do the professional examination, everyone knows that, either 350D or D50 is excellent for general shooting purposes...

of course we can get lots of information and try all different items before shop... but why not 350D??? take it easy, so as to make the story simple and joyful...

let the dslr web site to do the test... haha......
