I have bought an EOS 400D kit set
now planning to add a better lens
I will use it for my journey (both for general portrait + landscape)
and don't know how to choose between

1) Sigma AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC macro vs
2) Tamron AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II

both lens are famous and provide good quality picturs

but I heard of some drawback from each lens...

1) for sigma, some reports said it gives rise to more flaring

2) for tamron, some said its focusing speed is slower if used with canon camera (compared with nikon)
but many said its resolution is higher

both lens are similar in price
the sigma give an extra 20mm, which is more compatible with my future plan of buying a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L later
but I considered resolution is important

please help me and give your precious opinions .......

you have said that resolution is important criteria, then, tamron is your choice.
