I am using D300. I also like you before.
Finally, i got a 17~55
Since D300 is not a full frame DSLR, so the range will be x1.5. Then = to 25.5~82.5. So, it is good for normal using.

If you are using D3, sure go for 24~70mm
Any lens you have & want to buy?

For me, i already got the 50mm 1.4 & 17~55mm 2.8.
The next target is 70~200mm 2.8.

Agree with uncleseven. I got the same configuration as you except I got 50mm/f1.8. My next target is also 70-200mm.
Btw, 24-70mm is far more expensive than 17-55. The use of 24-70 really depends on if owner have D3.
