Battery Grip...You can put extra battery in it.
It also has a shutter button and AE lock and AF button. It maybe variant with different model. I am not 100% sure.

With the battery Grip, you can shoot with your camera vertically but without changing your hands position. So this is faster and more comfortable.

I use it when doing protrait and wedding. If I go out for a hike, I must leave it behind. It is a quite heavy.

Someone may argue you can have better balance after adding the battery grip when you lens is a lots heavier than the body. I am not quite sure about this. Try it yourself.
