excellent match if u don't shoot much landscape, because 24*1.6 = 38.4 is not wide enough for landscape

if u wanna take more "landscape and 人"

I suggest u buy $600-700 EF 50/f1.8 for portrait + $5xxx EFS-10-22 for landscape

50/f1.8: pro = cheap, sharp con = bokeh not good

10-22: pro = sharp, very wide con = dust eater

if u insist zoom lens, I suggest u consider a cheap cheap tokina 28-70/f2.8 which is very very soft at f2.8 to f3.5 (ideal for portrait) & very sharp after f4

search 2nd hand market (around $1000-1200 is reasonable)

how about 24-105? Cuz it has IS and will be much more practical if you like travelling around to take pictures without the stand. But of course it is not wide enough for landscape.

24-70mm f2.8係一支你不會後悔的鏡。 但用在asp-c機的確係冇咁wide，咁要睇下你接唔接受到38mm廣角喇。 如你plan將來會升FF，咁呢支真係極佳的配搭。

although its aperture is more flexible than 24-100mm (f/4.0)

其實24-70呢段range，IS相對來講並唔係太重要，有當然好，但冇亦都唔會有咩大問題。

I don't have EF 16-35mm f/2.8L, but according to many friends' opinion, if EF 17-40 f4L has 7 marks, it has 10 marks!

This lens is much useful for your 40D & can be used in full frame.

Also if u have enough $ to buy a portrait lens for your 40D, consider EF 50f1.4 (sharp but not nice bokeh)
and Sigma 50/f1.4 USM (may have off-focus issue, but very nice bokeh)

16-35mm f2.8L II <=== no experience on this lens as I don't have this, so can't comment on this
17-40mm f4.0L <=== good picture quality for APS-C (50D), but too heavy & not to wide enough; so so quality on 5D mark 2, a lot of CA, but can be fixed by software
24-70mm f2.8 <=== very very sharp, much sharper than 24-105, but no IS, also very heavy, not particularly useful in APS-C as not wide enough
24-105mm f4 IS <=== very sharp with very good IS, usable in 1/5 sec with 5D mark 2 @105 mm, seldom detached from my 5D2 since last month.

picture quality 24-70 > 24-105 > 17-40

if you want excellent image quality and don't mind MF for landscape, I would suggest zeiss 18mm
