Question about RAW, JPG and Trimming Post time: 4 月 27 日 |
|
|
hello chings,
I just started using RAW last week and noted (in DPP) the size of RAW file is 4752 x 3168 (3:2).
(1) If I wanna to convert to JPG in DPP, should I use this resolution or smaller like 1920 x 1280 (also 3:2) since HDMI TV only supports upto 1920 x 1080?
(2) If I trim a photo, and convert to JPG, should I not change the resolution? I never trim a photo before, pls advise how I can get the best and sharp trimmed photo.
THANKS

(1)
1080p(1920x1080), it is fit to a (1920 x 1080)pixel photo. since every pixeal is used and no spare.
But technically, it is difference platfrom.
(2)
Depend on your need. If you print it out on a 4R (6x4) size with 300dpi. The size of the photo should be 6x300, 4x300, = 1800 x 1200.
***** I'm not sure about point 1. If any wrong, please point it our. Thanks CHING *****

1) When you convert RAW to JPG, you should use the largest resolution available. In your case, you should convert it to 4752 x 3168 in order to maintain the details in the photo.
If you want to see the photos in HDMI TV, you might directly play the photos with original resolution, ie_ 4752 x 3168. The software in the TV could automatically resize it to suit the TV's resolution (1920 x 1080 in your case). Or, you might resize the photos via DPP software to 1620 x 1080 (3:2 aspect ratio). It would reduce the file size when you store it into a memory card for playing in TV.
2) When you trim a photo, the available resolution of the trimmed photo must be reduced. The final resolution of the photo depends on your selected area for trimming. Try it in DPP. You will see the resolution of "Width" and "Height" in the menu at right.

thanks chings
Kelvinshum - for (2), I just tried in DPP and I saw the resolution on the right hand side. If I want to print this trimmed photo in a shop (I mean 4R in fotomax shop), will the trimmed photo become rough or not sharp ? Anything I should aware to ensure the trimmed photos are sharp?
Kelvinshum - for (1), if I convert using 1920x1280, you mean the details in the photo will be lost?
My TV is an old model, cannot recognize photos > than 1920x1280.

chings,
one more thing.
when I convert to JPG in DPP, there is an option about quality. Should I use 10 or some other figures? It is not mentioned in the DPP manual.
THANKS

1) Comparing photos in 1920 x 1280 with the same in 4752 x 3168, the photos with larger resolution should be able to show you more details. If you see the photos in a computer monitor with full scale, you can see part of the photo. The details in this part in the photo will be shown to you in full scale. However, if you see the full picture in the monitor or your TV, there will be no difference between the re-sized photo or the original photo (since the original photo will be automatically resized to suit the monitor or TV's resolution).
2) KALKAL Ching has explained that the resolution required for printing a photo. With 300 dpi printing quality, the required resolution will be 1800 x 1200. If your trimmed photo has resolution larger than this requried resolution, the printing quality will not be affected.
3) Quality setting with 10 will give you the best quality of the jpg photo but the file size will be larger. Some C-hings tried to set different settings and found that the quality setting to 8 has given you a very good jpg photo. You may try it by yourself to see the difference.

Yes, 一般相片沖印都係.
如你要晒8R (8*10吋), 就要 2400*3000了.

I see, thanks c-hing.
So that means if I want to trim a small part of a photo, it will be bad to go for 8R, right?

KALKAL c-hing,
I tried trimming in DPP last nite.
Say i wanna to resize and print as 8R (8" x 10"), so it should be 8x300 and 10x300 which would be 2400 x 3000. but if i click on 2:3 or 3:2, it won't allow me as 2400x3000, but 2000x3000 only.
Another ching told me DSLR photo should retain 3:2 or 2:3, is that right?
so what should i do?
THANKS

8"x10" is not a proportion ratio 3:2
8"x12" is 3:2 OK.

By the way,
for TV resolution, it is better 16:9 in ratio,
the small the resolution allow the TV to open the file quicker whilst the large resolution will take more time to open....
