Hey bro,

These are two very different lens for different purpose.

If you need a fast lens to shot in low light situation, like wedding, kids running in the living room at night, only the f/2.8 will help. The VR can't do anything to help in this situation.

But if you only need a good mid range zoom, then the f/4 is a pretty good option now.

MineSky bro,

it's really depending on the situation. Some of my work involving shooting in a dim lighting church and flash photography is straightly prohibited.

In that case, sometimes i have shoot with wide open, but the 2470 handle the f/2.8 pretty well. Of course it has to be used with caution and user need to be well aware of what he/she is doing. Also FX body with high ISO does help out a bit as well. It's a matter about getting it, or not getting anything at all =p

Under the above condition, the f/4 lens are too slow and it allow less than 1/2 the light into the sensor comparing to what f/2.8 does. Even with the VRii, it is not fast enough to capture to wedding scene.

VR is very useful for still images, like landscape, or any object that are not moving at all. But for any object that move under a non-flash situation, it is not helpful at all.


btw, I am some old school shooter and I put lots of effort to improve my hand held stability. I can do 1/30 at 70mm without blur in a stable handholding posture. Of course I do appreciate the new VR =D

any f/2.8 with VRii is the best weapon =D

as I was borned in a digital camera and VR/IS/VC/OS Lens era, I am too rely on AF, VR these kind of handicap >.< My hand held ability is not so stable as well

some little trick for you to increase you handheld stability.

When you are getting close to you safety shutter speed, you need to take a deep breath, and breath out, and hit on the shutter speed after you breath out.

This is the only time your body is not moving by the breath.

Also you need to be aware of the standing and handholding position when you take your photos as well. That is a great deal to increase the stability.

If you do everything right, it easily a stop or two difference =D that's the "biological VR". Very important =D
