my dad bought a EPL-1 as a gift for me, i am new to it. i was wondering is it normal that i can't shoot when i place the lens too close to the object?

please help me, i want to know if there's anything wrong with the camera.

by the way....i am using it on iAUTO mode.

I assume you are using the 14-42 mm kit lens, I think this lens has a minimum focus distance of 25 cm.
