Technically speaking, Type I is thinner (3.3mm) and Type II is thicker (5mm), and that's the only difference.

Do you mean SanDisk's Ultra and Ultra II? According to the following page, they're Type I CF.

The thickness or the types of a CF has no absolute relationship with regard to its performance. Most flash-based CF are Type I and microdrives like HGST's and Magic-Stor's are Type II. IIRC CF network adapters are usually Type II as well.
