Conclusion....and what's to come

The 645D has changed the landscape of medium format digital. Pentax has given us the best handling MFSLR at the lowest price thus far. Image quality is excellent, and the high ISO is very usable. The Mamiya DF and Hasselblad H bodies have suddenly started to look very long in the tooth. All is not perfect, because Pentax really needs to release a full line of digitally-optimized lenses. The 55mm SDM is but a start, and a few question marks hover over the quality of their 'legacy' lenses.

All in all, however, Pentax has done a good job. The 645D is a photographer's camera. And that's the highest praise there is.

With an adaptor for Pentax 645,the following lens can be used for Pentax 645D --

Pentax 67,Hasselblad,Leica M visoflex,Carl Zeiss Jena 6x6,Rollei SL66, Linhof 69 and 45 lens (with modification).

These lens are good for landscape photography.

In fact,I have had the above lens for my Pentax 67 II body.

Given the short life- cycle of digital products and the success of Pentax 645N,

I think Pentax may soon launch Pentax 67 Digital with 80MP for the large format photography market.

This will then be welcomed by most of the landscape photographers.

Pentax 645D review - Verdict

The 645D will no doubt attract a niche audience, though its almost- £10k price tag is firmly out of reach for the majority.

The experience of using a medium format digital camera is very different from a DSLR and has many advantages, especially for landscape photographers.

To be clear:

the 645D is less of a studio camera than its competition, but its weather-sealed single body design firmly fixes it as one to use in the field or where large, resolute files are a must.

However the vertical run shutter, non-customisable construction and no tethered shooting ability may pose issues for certain users.

However its handling is a winner and easy to pick up.

For general use a pro-level DSLR still has more versatility but, so long as speed's no issue, the Pentax 645D is a pleasure to use

It is not suggesting that Pentax 645D could beat others in a real head to head, but you do need to make it at least competitive !

However,it is admitted that Pentax 645D sounds like a good entry into the Medium-Format market,if for no other reason than it might put some price pressure on the others.

The benefits for all of us will be that Pentax will sell more cameras, make more money, have more R & D money, and come up with better cameras.

The circle will be unbroken again to provide continued support and future models.

Time will tell, but it is definitely excited to see how well that Pentax has jumped into the ring !

New Pentax 645 wide-angle hinted at by Ned Bunnel posted on 11-23-10 in Pentax News

In his recent interview with the Online Photographer, Ned Bunnell hinted at the forthcoming release of a D-FA 25mm F4 lens for the 645D.

While complete specs for the lens haven't been leaked, we expect this lens to feature SDM as well as weather sealing,just like the current 55mm F2.8 lens.

The 25mm will only support the cropped sensor on the 645D, and
as such, it won't be usable on the film 645 bodies.

Its field of view will correspond that of a 33mm lens on the 645 film system, or a 14mm lens on the Pentax APS-C DSLRs (about 92 degrees diagonally).
