Ricoh buys Pentax to build interchangeable lens camera business

Hoya has sold the Pentax camera division to Ricoh. The Pentax Imaging Systems Division will be spun-out as a new company and its shares transfered to Ricoh on October 1st. The deal will also include the Pentax camera manufacturing subsidiary in Vietnam. A public announcement from Hoya explains that Ricoh is looking to build a consumer cameras business and wanted Pentax's interchangeable lens camera technology, lens technology and sales channels. Its plans for the business specifically include the interchangeable lens camera market. Hoya will retain the other Pentax businesses, such as medical devices, that it gained in its 2007 takeover. Terms of the deal were not disclosed but Japanese business paper Nikkei Business Daily reports a price of about 10 billion yen ($124.2 million).

Ricoh acquiring Pentax

It has been an open secret in the industry for some time that Hoya was looking for a buyer for the camera and lens division of Pentax.

Ricoh makes a very interesting new partner because it has a long history in the camera business.

Let's hope that Pentax continues to thrive under its new owners and that product lines,such as the Pentax 645D are supported and enhanced.

This is really a good news to all of Leica M and DSLR users.

My preliminary observation of this new product are -

1. Ricoh GXR Leica M 接環 (APS version)

This will be the first phase of its product developement.

The price of this product will be close to Sony NEX 5 .

Similarly,like NEX 5,with an adapter to M mount (made in China),most of other brands of lens (e.g.Contax,Canon,Nikon,Olympus,Sony,Leica R,Leica M39,Pentax,Minolta,M42,T2 etc.) can be used for this Ricoh GXR body.

2. Ricoh GXR Pentax K 接環 (APS version)

This will be made for exiting Pentax users with full automatic function,as Ricoh has acquired Pentax recently.

3. Ricoh GXR Leica M 接環 / Pentax K 接環 (Full Frame version)

This will be the second phase of its product developement,upon the success of its APS version.
