I just bought one a 1 month ago. No back focusing issue on my 7D and focus speed is quite good (of course not to be compared with the higher end fixed focal lenses). The images are quite sharp with the biggest aperture but highest PQ is at f8. The lens is not light but considering the focal range I think it is totally acceptable. This lens is very versatile because it is relatively small when the lens is retracted and the weight is light enough to be hand held. I always bring a monopod with me so even if my arms are tired I can still take pictures quickly.

I've studied a lot of reviews before I bought this lens, many reviewers concluded that the sigma 50-500 OS is the better than the 140-400 and 150-500.

terleung, yes, this is what I heard about the 50-500 which is even better than the 120-400 or 150-500.

Will see if I have luck to borrow from one of my friends for a test try.

$10600 cash in fever. 95mm UV filters are very expensive and so far I can't find any 95mm CPL but since 50-500 is not a big aperture lens I think most of the time CPL is not useful (because CPL will cut the amount of light entering the lens which makes the exposure even longer, not good for such a long lens and moving birds) , the Fijiyama UV costs me $600. Anyways this lens is good value for money, I own the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 OS so by only taking two lenses I already have the range from 17 to 500.

I don't own the Canon 100-400 but from the various reviews and tests I think Canon 100-400 should be a very good lens.

I did consider the big white before but there are a few concerns that changed my mind:
1. big white is already a few years old, so I worry that Canon might launch a new model (to my surprise Canon did launch the 200-400 w.1.4X)
2. although the push pull zooming of big white is fast, it is also being criticized by users that it sucks dust into the lens body
3. focal length in wildlife photography is key to success, the longer the better, considering that I already owned the Canon EF 70-300 IS USM, I really want to have much longer reach.

So it really depends on your budget and usage when one is planning to get a new lens.

terleung C Hing, the PQ seem very good, what is the shutter speed? Seem motion bur issue in the photos, do you have tripod or monopod in these photos?

The shutter speed was well over 1/500s for the first 3 photos but since all photos were taken hand held there were still a little motion blur. The last one is taken at 1/180s @500mm so I think it is good enough. Here is a photo taken a few days after the above photos, because the originals are stored in my home computer, this is downloaded from my facebook album:

同150-500 比支50-500mm os 真係sharp好多

well, I don't own the 150-500 OS so I can't comment on that but for those who are interested in wildlife photography and have limited budget I think the 50-500 OS is definitely a good choice because of the good IQ across the range and it's portability (comparing to the other more expensive 500mm lens). If you spend $5000 for a lens that turns out to be not up to your expectation you will end up spending $10000 for a better lens so why don't you save a little more money and get the better lens in the first place?
