I also have 580EX II and 270 EX II~as 270 EX II don't have M mode~so I use Phottix Strato II~than put the transmitter on the hot shoe of the camera~270 EX II on the transmitter~and the 580 EX II on the receiver~cause 580 EX II is easy to set M Mode~or one more useful tips~
you can put transmitter on the camera~580EX II on receiver and set it as "Master"~than the 270 EX II as "slave"~

My 580 is generation I not II
I am still testing the internal control of my camera and the flash
Most probably will buy one set of pixel king to wirelessly the 580 as master, the 270 II as slave
May I ask :
1. If i use ETTL mode to control the 580, then the 270 II slave will also output as 580 ? or fire at full power?
2. Can I use pixel king on 270 II as master (either ETTL or M mode), then 580 as slave(m mode to control output)?

I have 20D 580EX1 and 430EX1, pixel knight
I tested the following
- 580 as master on 20D, well trigger 430 as slave

Then
- 20D with pixel transmitter
- 580 with pixel receiver, 580 set to master
- 430 set to slave
Result: Slave not working, only master fired.

I also tested with infra transmitter, almost same result as you

Test 1: 580ex1 on 5d3 as master, 270ex2 as slave, both ok
Test 2: transmitter on 5d3, 580ex1 on infra receiver, 270ex2 as slave, only 580ex1 ok

I just want both flash fire wirelessly with output power under my control(if can use ETTL for bonus), but sure what equipment should I buy? : (

Just tried again to confirm

I have 20D 580EX1 and 430EX1, pixel knight
I tested the following

TEST 1
- 580 as master on 20D, well trigger 430 as slave. Just to make sure it works.

TEST 2
- 20D with pixel transmitter
- 580 with pixel receiver, 580 set to master, ETTL, no ratio
- 430 set to slave, Group B
Result: Both Flash fired but cannot control the output by camera +/- flash output, seems full output for both

TEST 3
- 20D with pixel transmitter
- 580 with pixel receiver, 580 set to master, ETTL Group A:B with ratio, 8:1
- 430 set to slave, Group B
Result: Both Flash fired, seems full output for both.

TEST 4
- 20D with pixel transmitter
- 580 with pixel receiver, 580 set to master, ETTL Group A:B with ratio, 1:8
- 430 set to slave, Group B
Result: Both Flash fired, seems full output for both.

TEST 5
- 20D with pixel transmitter
- 580 with pixel receiver, 580 set to master, Manual control the output Group A:B with ratio, 1/4 for A and 1/64 for B
- 430 set to slave, Group B
Result: Both Flash fired. A is much brighter than B

TEST 6
- 20D with pixel transmitter
- 580 with pixel receiver, 580 set to master, Manual control the output Group A:B with ratio, 1/64 for A and 1/4 for B
- 430 set to slave, Group B
Result: Both Flash fired. B is much brighter than A

Do you know using ratio can control the output or not? (just like test 5 and 6 setting)

note that Pixel Knight is NOT the same as Pixel King

for Pixel Knight is cheaper, which states that it supports ONLY to EX II flashes.

for Pixel King, you can bring your flash to confirm. Just it is much more expensive. If you go for Pixel King, then I think that Phottix maybe a better choice for you
