練習賽 is less crowded!
In the past, you can get a whole day pass for $50. 葡京看台 for another $50.

Ticket booth is just outside the pier. No need to buy ticket in advance except for the final race - Sunday.

5D2+24-105 is a bit slow and short for such sports events.
With 5D2, you can still take the panning shots.
For Lens, consider 200mm+ for close ups.
The Best shooting place is at 水塘看台.
水塘看台 is usually crowded, but you will find a space.

葡京看台 is difficult to take good shots but good for watching car crashes, and to appreciate the professionalism and efficiency of the workers who risk their lives to clean up the mess for the races.
24-105 may work at 葡京看台, but you have to be there very early and get the best seat.

You will enjoy the "stereo" sound effect of racing machines and audience.
