No spot metering. It is usually used in backlit situation. Used when you only need correct exposure of a particular spot and want to ignore the lighting condition at the rest of the area.

I think spot metering is suitable in concert, sport, some portrait....
Without spot metering, you may adjust the exposure compensate to obtain correct exposure, just it's not easy....

I don't use spot metering in night scene, rather evaluative metering then -1.0 to -1.5 EV depend on the average area of light sources: the more the light sources, the lesser is the -ve exposure compensate.
(any your experience or techique on night scene for share?)
