not wide enough. supposedly, you're using APS-C DSLRs like 450D, 50D ... in which case, your lens is effectively 45-216 ... get a 17-40/4L if it's still within your budget, else, get a EF-S lens starting from 17mm or 18mm

F1.8 very useful for indor situations like museums where flash is not allowed. Of course, F1.4 is even brighter. This said, EF 50mm = 80mm on APS-C wor ... more like a portrait lens rather than for landscape
