any canon flash with extension EX can be use perfectly with 450D, e.g. 430EX, 580EX version I/II. Even the cheap $600 380EX (2nd hand) can do the job very nicely with your 450D.

Warning, users of 3rd party brand must know a fact that even your 3rd party flash works perfectly with your existing CANON, it may not works perfectly with new camera, even if u upgraded the firmware of the flash. A flash from my friend works perfectly on my 20D can only works in manual full power mode in my 5D2 even though the flash has been upgraded firmware.
