I have EPSON 895, HP7550 and CANON S830D. Epson produces the sharpest printout but has the slowest speed. Hp is not so sharp (but still acceptable) but more natural. It has the top speed too. Canon 830D, just forget about it. Maybe the newer models are better.

8R direct print from Epson 895 : 2 speeds
quality set to low and photoenhance set to off, 6 minites. Otherwise 12 minutes.
As for Hp 7550, it takes 6 minutes no matter what the setting is.
And do not believe the spec of Canon 830D. About 10 to 11 minutes for a 8R ( actual size larger than 8R in direct print mode) printout. Both speed and quality let me down.

depends on how good you want. I think any high grade printer like canon 950, 905 or epson 900 will do a good job. Canon is faster and cheper on ink. Epson is slower and more expensive, but quality is a little better. I suggest the new canon 865 costing about 1500 - a fairly good compromise. I personally don't like HP because their ink is too expensive.

I also know Canon is most fast but the ink is expensive than espon. If you buy all 4-6 color, it costs you about $4xx. It is expensive than espon.
I also agree with you high grade printer will do a good job.
Do you know how long to print a 8R photo at best mode by 865
