Pioneer A3 : Angle
Visually, the 7.2 by 12.6 by 5.8-inch (HWD), 7.7-pound Pioneer A3 is, well, a bit dull.
Pioneer A3 : Front
The black front panel of the system is as nondescript as it appears in the images accompanying this review, hiding two 3-inch mid-range drivers and a single 1-inch tweeter.
Pioneer A3 : Left
Along the left side of the lower front panel are LED status indicators for Power, Input, Network, and Battery.
Pioneer A3 : Right
To the right of the same section are capacitive touch controls that can be a bit annoying to operate. You tap on the right, the status indicators change on the left.
Pioneer A3 : Back
The back panel houses an antenna to aid streaming, as well as the connection for the power supply/battery charger, a 3.5mm Aux input, an Ethernet connection (for wired router playback), and a USB connection (for setting up AirPlay, as well as charging or wired playback).
Pioneer A3 : Rear Ports
All of these connections have rubber, waterproof snap-shut covers over them.
Pioneer A3 : Rear Ports
The Ethernet port and USB port are separate from the Aux in and power supply jack.
Powerful audio for the size. Streams wireless audio via AirPlay, DLNA, HTC Connect, and Wireless Direct when there is no Wi-Fi signal. Water-resistant, portable, with rechargeable battery.
Distorts on deep bass tracks at top volumes. Very slow to power up. Overly complicated controls, and set up process is not terribly intuitive.
The Pioneer A3 (XW-SMA3-K) is probably the most versatile wireless streaming speaker we've seen—it's even portable, rechargeable, and water resistant
