dclkwok got the definition right, but "淺景深 - 大光圈 only the subject is clear. " is not necessary true.

I have owned the Nikon D1x, Canon 1D, and now the 1Ds. The main difference you can expect from a DSLR over point and shoot prosumers are

1) True optical viewfinder. What you see is what you get (note, some non pro DSLR do not offer 100% coverage in the viewfinder)

2) Because of the mirror, you do not get 'live LCD view'

3) Much faster response (very low lag time)

Whether the Depth of Field (DOF) is shallow or not, it depends on the lens/aperture you choose to use. You can of course have very shallow DOF if you use say a 85/1.2 lens and shoot wide open, but you can, just like any other camera, step down (to say f11) and get more DOF.. So the DOF is still a variable controlled by the photographer.

The EOS-300D is a new price point for DSLR mkt. Take a good look! Very promising.
