1. check if it can read your card. Most of them in the market cannot read XD. Normally can read CF I/II, SD, MMC, MS etc..
2. USB speed. If your computer has USB 2.0, buy a card reader supports USB 2.0. Otherwise buy a USB 1.1 will be OK.
3. If you are using CF, there is a kind of reader that can only read CF but it is relatively cheap - around $50-60 of USB1.1.
4. For multi-card reader, USB 1.1 is around $100 that cannot read XD. USB 2.0 is around $150 that also cannot read XD. For those can read XD that normally be USB 2.0 cost about $200.
Hope this helps.
P.S. sorry for using English as I type Chinese very slow.

$2xx for a USB 2.0 reader seems over-priced, which brand is that?
You should have a look at Transcend 7-in-1 USB 2.0 card reader, which is available for only $135 in Golden (A-Grade). It's a very nice unit and will accept many different media other than CF I/II.

USB 2.0 is backward compatible with USB 1.1, that means if you happen to have a motherboard with USB 1.1 ports, it'll still run flawlessly.
Surely the Transcend supports CF I/II cards, I couldn't imagine any multi-format reader without support for the very popular CF media. :)
