S45 is said to have slightly better picture quality than A80. I honestly don't see the reason to switch to A80 if you have already had S45, unless you want variable angle LCD. I tried the Canon WC-DC52 wide converter on A80 which is a joke. Distortion is huge and sharpness is barely okay only. For general purpose, S45 is fine.

I have A80 which takes very sharp pictures, low noise with good battery life. S50 has 1 more MP & RAW format but with more noise as a trade-off (because both are 1/1.8" CCD). You can see how sharp the A80 is here: http://www.pbase.com/wlachan/canon_a80

I do not know every models but after doing research for weeks, my conclusion is that Canon have the best digital compacts in general. I have been using Pentax 135 SLRs for 15 years, but when it comes to digital cameras, Canon have the most # of good cameras. Unfortunate but true.
