I think you need to make up the mind on what pixel you need?

I would say one of the most popular choice is Canon Powershot A80($3280)... but the prices is a bit more than your buget... the reason is the type of memory card using... CF card... you can buy optional Wide and Tele lens... AA battery(Rechargable)...
However if you still want to keep your buget... under$3000... you can go 4 the Powershot A70... =^_^=

Okay you want a zoom one...

Canon Powershot A80 is 3 times optial zoom with 3.6 times digital zoom...
4.0 mega pixal (1/1.8" CCD - the bigger CCD is the better it will be)...
270 degree on the TFT display... you can do self photoing... =^_^=
ISO 50-400...
3 mins movie...
P,A,S,M Mode...
Direct Print(but cost so much money)...
CF Card Type I & II...

如果唔係用來學影相，我唔會買A80。部機好像玩具，又唔型又唔靚又唔係開機快...。我發現學影相用Olympus Camedia C-740 UZ好好多，有好多FUNCTION重有手動功能(Change 功能好快)，10x zoon，相質素高, 色準.....都係$2780

但好多人買數碼機都係用來去街、去旅行同朋友影o下相，噤最重要係自動對焦準，細，同開機快!!
