I would like to know what is EOS stand for?
And what is EF stand for?

And why do they have those name?

EOS is a milestone that Canon changed from manual system to a completely new electronic operating system, that includes the electronic focusing lens too!!

As far as I know:
EOS offically mean 'Electro-optical system' from Canon. It was chosen also because of it is the Greek Goddess of the Dawn, meaning the arrive of a new system.

Canon's own EOS magazine also pointed out that Eos is the Welsh for nightingale.


I don't know what EF mean, I guess it means 'Electronic Focus' since the focus motor is built in the lens rather than in the body.

I read that 'Electro-optical system', from Canon's EOS magazine a long time ago, i forgot which one, so i believe its the original meanning.

For EF, i haven't found anything so far.
Anyway, i think we should spend time to take good photos than debate the meaning of EOS, agree?
