Cannon S1 seems better. Because :

1. Longer zoom, 10X
2. Has image stablizer, this is very usefull for super tele zoom.
3. Use AA battery

I am using Nikon CP8700 which is the upgrade version of 5700.
So I can predict 5700 will be :
1. Focus speed is slow at CP8700, it will be worse in 5700.
2. Use Li-ion battery. Although it can also use 2CR5 battery as alternative. Better than most DC using Li-ion rechargable only.
AA battery is the best solution. As battery technology keep improving, you can have high cap rechargable AA battery from time to time.

It the image is not sharp enough, even my 8Mpixel is useless. This happen very often in super tele zoom while DC shake.

I like Nikon more than Canon. But in this grade of DC, Nikon does no have a similar DC to Canon S1-IS.
