His prime concern is the Photo Quality for printed 4R aiming at indoor portraits using flash.

my preference for his DC are (not in order)

1. IXUS 430/500
2. Minota G400/G500
3. Cannon S60
4. A80
5. Sony W1
6. Any suggestions?

After a month of research I am finding the the Sony W1 with the largest LCD which is good for my dad eyes. However, if W1 pic quality is not as sharp and colour not as saturated as the others, then I would rather not get him the W1.

He own a cannon G3, do u think he will be satisfied with IXUS 500 picture quality?

I have seen many samples from IXUS 500 and I dont find they are quite as sharp and pack with as much resolution than the G3, but would this cam still be pleasing to print 4R photo?

niceguy. If your dad is aiming at indoor portrait, you may consider Panasonic FX5 as it has image stabiliser function which is very useful for shooting in dim environment and indoor. Its size is really compact and the outlook is good also. Image quality however may not be as good as Canon and don't know whether your dad would satisfied or not if he is using G3. However, for normal users it should be acceptable anyway. Personally, I'm also looking at Canon S60 but it's not launched yet (have to wait a few more days). As a Canon G3 user, I think your dad would like S60 most.

yes he likes the S60 very much but it is going to be v expensive (3900)
and most importantly it is only slightly smaller than the G3.

But the IXUS 430/500 is a lot smaller, do uthink the photo quality will be near the same to G3 or there is stilla big different at ISO 50-100?

Also if the S60 is not for sale before Father's dad. I cant get it for him.

I will go into research of the Panasonic DC that u mentioned.

niceguy, I have a look at some sample pictures of Canon S60 from dcresource which I'm quite disappointed. You should read more comments and reference of S60 before you make the choice. Seems that the new lens of S60 at wide angle is not so good. I think IXUS 430/500 should meet your dad's requirement but the only thing your dad doesn't like is lacking of manual function which provides some inconvenience in some cases. Moreover, you should also consider the accessories like memory card. If you buy another dc brand, say SONY W1, you or your dad have to buy memory stick then. Stay loyal to Canon can save the money for memory card at least.

McDonald: yes thanks i think u are quite right about the ixus 430/500. Oh my dad does use manual much apart from night shots...so he should be ok with ixus
the thing he doesnt like about g3 is its narrow angle with only 35mm there isnt much comprosition to be had.

yes we really dont want to buy Memory stick unless the W1 can yeild as sharp picture as ixus 430...do u think it can?

My dad is 53 year old with "OLD FLOWER" so he doesnt like small LCD as he cannot see it v well....so if W1 is near as good as the IXUS with only 1.5' LCD, I would buy him the W1...

what do u everyone think?

If you dad have G3 already, then I won't suggest A75/A80 since the size is almost same as G3 ! What is the point to buy similar size DC ?
I suggest buying small DC !
Minolta G400/G500 is not good as the flash power is really weak !
Consider Sony W1, Minolta Xt or Casio Z40 !

how is the flash on the W1, and the LCD is large enough for my eyes.

The main concern is still the sharpness, vividness and indoor pic quality for Ixus vs W1.

Which camera have the better quality in terms of the above will be the one for my dad.....

To niceguy:

There is pre-flash with the W-1 built-in flash, as it's to calculate the correct exposure with the shot it taken, so it doesn't give out any over-lighted photos, very good flash. But as you know, it can't light up a larger room.

thanks I have looked and the W1 is really good....

How about the Minolta G400? the ISO 400 sample picture of the cat yeilds very little noise.

would this be a good choice?
