In my humble opinion :

When we pick up a camera, point to the subject and then shoot, the scene is what we normal see from our eye. Nothing special.

Now amateur photographers want to take photos that is different from what we normally see.

The easiest method is to use a wide angle lens like 12 to 28mm (35mm film camera equivalent). With wide angle lens the visual perspective changes.

Wide angle lens is very attractive because we can point and shoot as usual and the photo already stands out from other using 50mm standard lens and tele lens. There is no hard learn skill required. :-)

Panorama photo with 2 or more photos stitched together cannot replace a wide angle lens because the perspective and the effect are different.
