Yes, you right.
Most pentax dc is compact size, that limit their battery and flash.
Know, both battery drain and flash lamp size are the important factors for night shot ! Also the explosure time, like s4,s4i or s40 are 4 seconds only and no bulb set too.

The major selling point of pentex Compact DC is not photo quality but it's size and weight.
Pentax DC could produce satisfy photo when print not bigger than 4R.
However compare with other brand, it is not the best.

Low model of Pentax DC is just fair ! But I recommend Pentax 555 ! Pretty good DC with 5x optical zoom ! And the exposure time can up to 15s !

For best night shot quality with compact size(means can put it on your belt, suit pocket or neck), you can consider the Canon IXUS 400 or 500.
