I am using 17-40L, I think this lens is very good in DSLR, and using in SLR is also good. 20 prime is a good lens. But for distortion, 17-40 have similar level as 20 prime.
17-35 f/2.8L .... it is not a good lens actually. Due to the short focus distance, the poor flare control, the vignetting problem, Canon release 16-35L to replace it. And 17-40L got only f/4L, so many ppl will consider 17-35L instead. But about photo quality(for 1.6x crop only), flare control, vignetting control, 17-40 is the best among three L. (20-35 f/2.8L will be the winner if compare with above three)

One point is, 20-35 f/2.8L is out of market already, 2nd hand price range from $3500 - 5000.
