I am a nikon user but just buy a 20D with 17-40L lens. Want to buy one more lens for protrait / close up. Any advice.
I know most 20D users buy 17-40L and 50/1.4. Is this standard len useful as it just slightly longer in focal length than 40. How about 85/1.8? Any user's comment?

May be you can buy EF 100mm F/2.8 marco

the first lens I bought was 17-40F4L
the second lens is 50mm 1.8II followed by 70-200F4L
Then, I sold my 50mm 1.8II and bought a 50mm 1.4USM

17-40L - great for scenenary
50mm1.4 - brilliant for portrait, it's portrait king, no other choice
70-200F4L - covers a longer range, also good for portrait.

(1) 17-40L w/filter $5630- w/filter
(2) 50mm1.4 w/filter $2720-
(3) 70-200F4L one month old 2nd hand w/filter $4600-

(1) + (2) +(3) = $12,950-HK

24-70f2.8L one lens cost you almost 10K and the lens is too heavy, I wouldn't think about it.

Hi Korea, I agree with chu ka man, as you want protrait / close up, I think 100mm 2.8 marco is more sutiable.

100mm 2.8 when fitted to 20D become 160mm, I think it may not be suitable for protrait.

My choice is between 50/1.4 or 85/1.8. However, is 50/1.4 still useful as it seems not big difference to 17-40 at 40. Any more advice. Thx.

Korea, I have the same concern as you. I own the 17-40mm and 100mm macro. I'm considering either 50mm f1.4 or 24-70mm f2.8. Is it sensible to have 2 lenses with close coverage (40mm vs 50mm)? I'm going to use them for recital rehearsals/concerts and outdoor use. Another option is to get a tele first, either 135mm f2 or 70-200 f2.8.

anyway 50 & 85 is good for protrait .But if you try 100mm ,you will
know that this lens is most better for macro and protrait .

well 50mm is not equal to( 50 X 1.6 =) 80mm ,
and 85mm is not equal to( 85 X 1.6 =) 136mm .

Hi chu ka man, seem you are a protrait pro, all lens are good for protrait .
I have 10~22, 17~40 and 70~200 F4, what will you recommend for protrait between 50 1.4 and 100 f 2.8?

If put aside 17-40, 50/1.4 seems better than 85/1.8 as 85/1.8 when fitted to 20D is a bit longer for protrait.
As for quality of 50/1.4, any drawbacks? e.g dark corners at 1.4. Anyone could help?

My Choice:

EOS20D + EF28-135 f3.5-5.6 IS USM + EF 50 f1.8 + EF 100 f2.8 marco usm + EF70-200 f2.8 IS L USM

I also just use 20D for few weeks,
Very happy!
