The two lenses are of different focal ranges, so they can't be compared. Ask yourself, what kind of scenes are you going to shoot?

But I think both lenses are overpriced. I'd rather get the 17-40mm to substitute for the 16-35mm. For taking pics for groups of people, be careful of distortion at both sides, but this problem is less serious in 1.6x cameras.
