Really 2 different lens. I bought 17-40 for its lens body, IF and color (photo). For 17-85, sorry, optical performance are always my first concern. Of course, 17-85 isn't a bad lens at all.

Many people said that optical perfomance of many cheaper lens (17-85 / 18-55, not cheap but a bit cheaper) can give u the same picture after editing by photoshop. To me, 17-40 is really help me to save a lot of time to do so. As u know, time is always the most important in your life.
