Pentax DL + kit lens (DA18-55/3.5-5.6) + Kingston SD 2GB (or whatever brand around $1k). The whole package should be just $6K. Don't buy filter, just use the supplied lens hood for protection.

Although AF speed is not as fast as D50 / D70s / 350D, but the direct output jpg is already very good and no need PS retouching.

I have D70s kit and DS kit, photo quality of DS wouldn't be inferior to D70s.

I know from experience that this particular Pentax DA18-55 kit lens has very good optics even against more expensive lenses. I know the Canon kit lens is poor, but I have no idea about the Minolta or Nikon. However, I know the Nikkor DX 18-70/3.5-4.5 has QC issue. A friend of mine has this lens and it has some serious optical alignment issue, and Nikon was unable to correct the problem. So make sure you test them properly within the exchange period.

Consider photo quality : DL (I don't like PS retouching)
Consider function : D50 (I like 1/500 sec flash sync and fast AF)
Consider hand feeling : D50
Consider anti hand shaking :D5D
Consider second hand market : 350D

The Olympus kit lens EZ14-45mm is good. There are also many excellent zooms to choose from. However, one must realize the Olympus system has significantly higher noise than 1.5/1.6x or FF DSLRs beyond certain ISO. If this isn't your concern or you are a daytime shooter, Olympus is perfectly fine. But if you love to shoot low light without flash, you may not be able to stand the amount of noise at 1600 (and there is no 3200).
