I have the sigma 80-400 APO, the lens is very sharp more or less the same as a prime lens (compared with EF 135/f2.8), but not as sharp as Tamron 90/2.8.
THE OS is also as good as EF's IS lens, it really works!
I don't have the EF100-400 to compare, sorry, but u can try fredmiranda's site to see the comments from others.
CAUTION of this lens
1. extremely heavy, cannot carry around, it's just tooooo heavy
2. battery eater! THE OS draws much current from your battery, so bring more batteries
3. slow focusing speed compared with other USM lens.
conclusion: I love this lens much because it can take photos in the fashion shows/catwalk without using flash.

I have the 100-400 and it has very good image quality, (L) class. I used to have the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 and the 100-400 is definitely superior in IQ. The only downside of the 100-400 is its aperture, only 4.5-5.6. Sometimes this is just not fast enough, especially in low light conditions. Not sure about the aperture of the Sigma you want, but if budget allows, L lens are normally better than others. Both lens are heavy, I imagine.
