It is a hot topic of "Canon is not sharp enough".

I tried Canon 350D and took a few photos (some are on tripod) last Sat. I found that when compare with Nikon D50, the photos were not sharp enough! (lens: 17-85mm f/4-5.6, sharpness +3, contrast +1)

Any users have the same experience?
Is it the problem of 350D only?
Or, all canon DSLRs have the same problem??

First, there is no +3 setting for sharpness
Second, 17-85 is very soft at wide end
Third, D50 offers better sharpening algorithm (post processing)

Get a prime lens and you will probably know how "sharpness" is archieved.

I use kit lens for D50 and all pictures are sharp enough at any range. Do it means that Nikon lens is better than Canon lens??

First, 350D is borrowed from my friend. I couldn't recall what was the highest sharpness of 350D. But, it was set to be the highest when I shot the photo. (may be it was +2)

Second, I am not trying to "blacken" the name of Canon. I have sold my D50 out 3 months ago. I am actually decided to buy Canon 30D. That's why I want to know more about the picture quality of Canon system.

Please accept my apology for any mis-understanding that caused. I am +ve to both Canon and Nikon system.

My question is:

1. Even Nikon kit lens can give a good picture quality, why Canon cannot?
2. Any technique / setting for taking good picture using Canon system?

1. 因為canon個tune比較soft, 影人比較順眼, 未必因為支鏡 (不過17-85 IS wide end 係比較散)
如果想利d, 可以收兩級光圈, 支鏡有IS應該有本錢收光圈
試真d, 如果唔鍾意canon個tune, 用番nikon好d

2. 用raw影, 收光圈

普遍canon tele 鏡好d, nikon wide 鏡好d
canon平鏡有部份唔多掂, 可以用副廠 (e.g. A16)

I decide to buy 30D this week. Should I buy 50mm f/1.4 or 85mm f/1.8?

Canon could sell her 30D at below $5000 HKD, why didn't she? And as far as I know many non-L class canon zoom lens are crap.

Tamron 16-50 f/2.8

Prime lenses do not suit your case.

And, do you means that I should not buy Canon non-L lens?

and 人像 (less) --> 50/f1.8 or 50/f1.4 (for rebate $1000)

(It is expensive~ Would I use A16 instead?)

2) any other lens than 17-40L to get rebate $1000?
3) does A16 available in stores b4 the wedding?
4) do you need resistance lens body --> 17-40L (drop, miosture, salty & dust proof)?
5) do you think A16's AF is fast enough?
