          | Please specify the following: 1. are u using internal flash,
 2. external flash (model no. please),
 3. lens,
 4. manual flash or auto mode
 5. distance between object & lens,
 6. object in front of a dark background, e.g. total darkness at night outdoor

 If u specify more details, the problem can be solved

          | The details are as following:
 1) I am using the internal flash;
 3) the lens come with the kit, i.e. 18-55mm;
 4) auto mode (the P mode also has the same over exposure problem);
 5) About 6-8 feet;
 6) I took the picture in a mall (indoor, not very bright) and the flash pop up automatically; I tried at home and using the automatic mode and the P mode, it is the same.

 Thanks for your expert advice.

          | that's simple to solve, as the flash cannot cover the mall, so it try to output as much as flash light as possible, so your object get overexplosed.
 The solution: correct explosure on object

 use any of P, A, S mode THEN Menu, 2nd menu, 2nd line "Flash exp. comp", highlight it, set to left -1 or -2

 ISO set to 100

 manually pop up the flash

 =============
 Another solution, correct explosure on object AND the background
 use M mode, use 1/30 sec, F4.0 / 5.6 manually pop up flash, then take photo, the flash should be able to cover up to 3 to 4 m

 ISO set to 100 or 200

          | if u use all automatic mode, the flash explosure will be ok if your background is at nearly the same as your object, e.g. a lady right in front of a wall OR your flash explosure will be over explosed if your background is far from your object, e.g. a lady at the street at night
