I have F31fd don't know whether similar in Canon' fd, and I have checked my photos taken with fd the apeture still f 2.8 with flash (full auto mode, otherwise fd would not work).

However, the fd will show a priority focusing face which appear to be a green square on the face and other faces with a white square when you took the photo, and not all faces are detected as may be some of the faces are not in the focus plane.

the manual said the fd system will determine the face which is the nearest to the centre as the prority focus face.
