If you used to Canon, 400D is a good choice for beginner.

2. 400D can use EF lens but need to x 1.6 even EF-S lens need to x 1.6

3. If you are not very high demand on quality actually, kit len is ok for most user but the apeture is not large enough 3.5 to 5.6 and of course 50 1.8 is excellent if you know it is only $ 600 now with large apeture and very sharp.

If you can only 1 len first then need to know what you need to photo first, the kit len provide a range of 18-55mm and when you x 1.6 it becomes about 28-90 a good range for normal use.

It depends on you take photos indoor or outdoor and how old is your daugther. The kit len only can be brought with the body but you can buy the 50 1.8 anytime later. (remember 50 x 1.6 = 80 mm mostly for portrait not suitable for other family photos unless you walk a bit to a longer distant to take your photo.)

If you want to have the range of 18-55 or other the cost will be higher for other lens (as you can't buy the kit lens only later on).

So know what you need first.

If you don't mind using 2nd hand, there are many kit lenses selling here at a good price.

I suggest 50mm F1.8 + body
