I can't tell.

A few factors lead to the distortion of your photo:

1) It's the wide end of a zoom;

2) You are close to the object;

3) The design of the lens.

At this price range, you just can't expect too much from a DC.

Never heard of a poor QC would lead to the distortion of pictures (though there is always some possiblities), so bringing your DC to Nikon's CS can't help.

If you have really think so, I would suggest to test another P5000 at shops before taking it back, at the same distance, of course.
