Nikon annouced D3 and D300 at the same time, believe Nikon needs to keep the sales of DX Nikkors.

If only launched D3, many nikonians will look forward D300 as full frame then customers may wait for D300 annoucement and stop purchasing DX lenses in the period and will make the sales of DX lenese dropped.

Now D300 is confirmed as DX format so Nikon's mid level FF DSLR will not be launched in two to three years and so high priced DX lenses will still have market for the coming few years until mid level FF DSLR is introduced.

I believe not many amateur fans are interested by dinosaur machine like D3.
