It all depends on what do you expect from a $600-700 kit len, if you used to DC and first time to use DSLR then it will be good enough.

The photo taken from kit len is definitely much better than normal DC image quality. So if your budget is tight and don't know what to buy you can start from it.

If you have budget and have some ideas on DSLR and with some requirements for image quality then forget about the kit lens.

I do feel disappointment of color and sharpness performance from my current prosumer DCs, I want to take pic with better resolution and color, so 400D and Nikkon 40DX are my choices. Which one should be the most suitable for my consideration.

Both can meet your requirements, the most important thing is you are selecting system rather than the camera itself as DSLR is unlike DC when DC is one complete camera and that all, while DSLR is a range of stuff eg body, lens, flash etc.

Normally speaking started from the film age people will say Canon for portrait as the colour tone make people skin look reddish and charming, while Nikon is for landscape. Of course it all depends on what you normally shot, and nobody say Canon can't take landscape and Nikon can't take portrait , it just a matter of taste.

I personnally use Canon so I would recommend Canon as EOS system developed by Canon is quite complete and have a lot of potential for future innovation. One reason being I use Canon back from the film age and their EOS len I can still use them today (almost 20 years ago).

You can go to Canon and Nikon showroom to have a demo, Canon showroom at TST and you can't try anything and nobody will sale you anything at all, you may even try some of the len lock up in the cabinet just ask the people there, their services is very good.

No ideas on Nikon, may some Nikon user can help.

Try and feel on your own, by the way all Canon DSLR use CMOS sensor and Canon is famous for high iso low noise performance.

Nikon just change some of their DSLR from CCD to CMOS (D300 and D3 and some other I can't sure).

Finally, I will welcome you if you use Canon as I have a 400D as well, I nomally bring it with me when I go out and no particular topic to shot as this is very handy. I will bring a 5D if I know I need to shot something special.

在這裏發出提問的用家，一般都是入門者，但又不肯接受入門用家這個事實，而願意多付費用購買較靚的器材，所以才發出提問。

回答的網友一般都鼓勵買靚野，事實上這些網友建議的確實較靚，但當然是一分錢、一分貨囉！

至於買家能否發揮器材的長處，則要看各人的造化了！

i think it is okay given the price. only a few hundred. any better Canon lens will cost a few thousands.
