I am using 17-55 for my 2 years daughter, even indoor environment with warm light. Image Stability is very useful to take sharp photos with lower shutter speed.

If you have a good noise reduction DSLR cam, say 40D, ISO 1250 to 1600 with this lens has a good performance for photos

50 1.8 is good choice but may not be that flexible, it is very cheap only $ 600, you can try this. (

17-55 very good with IS and image quality excellent. $6700

24-70 can be used on FF (5D, 1Ds mark II,III etc) very heavy 950g. $9300

I have first two but for 400D 17-55 will be more flexible.

I have the third one, EF 24-70mm f2.8L can produce prefect quality of your phot.

17-55 IS is better balance using on 400D

24-70 is good, but no IS and weight almost twice as your 400D body so the handling might not be as good


50 1.8 just buy it, good for candid shots, very handy

EFS 60mm f2.8 Macro USM, it also very good to take close up.

24-70mm f2.8L, i used on 40d. Weight & Quality is allways at the same side. ><

60 micro does not have f2.8 at close range, that should be taken into consideration when buying the micro lens.

It's very funny to take a phot with baby. Have u used a really macro len before? It's not same as some lens 17-70 or 80 something like that with macro function.

Please see the booket for Canon to introduce Macro Len, Some samples of close up phot under f2.8 to take it.

Maybe other bands cannot, i'm not sure. I will try my EFS 60mm macro tonight and tell the result to you.

I think there is the difference of some zoom lens with macro function between with the "real macro len".
