please define more detail about image quality?
noise? color? etc...?
G9 has better noise control
GRD has very good quality lens which make more solid image and more natural color
actually this 2 cameras are quite difference type.
G9 has good noise control, 6X zoom
GRD has great lens, 28mm wide no zoom, smaller size, better manual control

as a film camera user, I really like G9 because it is a very compact camera. yes DSLR can make good quality picture but it is too heavy and big for me. I can carry G9 everyday in my backpack and shoot everyday. with dslr or slr I have to bring it on purpose...

for sure is GRD, now GRD II.
simply go to Flickr & check the group "Ricoh GR Digital". see the full size image.
simply go to DP Review & see the "Ricoh" forum. nowhere else wud the users be so enthusiastic & so grateful for buying the camera.
or simply check the column HERE ! - the GR Digital thread.
i use both Canon & Ricoh. Canon tends to be too soft & warm & get the the "oil painting" look. GR Digital lens are excellent & much sharper & expressive.
at higher iso, the Canon grain is not nice. GR Digital grain has the "film" look !
many professional photographers take GR Digital as their small back-up "dagger". G9 is hahaa.

Both are very good cameras. I have not used a GRD before, but had a GX100 for a month. Then I sold it and bought a G9.
If you are not going for the wide angle and don't mind the extra weight and size, I think G9 is a better camera. The price difference is also very substantial, $3,680 vs $5,000+. With the difference in price, I can buy some accessories for the G9, like wide angle convertor, filters, etc.
Some people like the picture style of GRD, very film-like. But for creative shoots, I will use DSLR. For the price of GDR II, you can buy a DSLR kit set! I am waiting for the Canon 5D MkII for my creative shooting, and use the G9 as my day-to-day use.

<Some people like the picture style of GRD, very film-like. But for creative shoots, I will use DSLR. >
1. grainliness has no direct relationship with "being creative". Lomo plastic quality can also be creative. A Canon IXUS 75 can also be creative.
2. the essence of GRD is : you go for creative shots with a quality comparable to DSLR but with the comfort & easiness of a "point-and-shoot" !!
<For the price of GDR II, you can buy a DSLR kit set!>
1. that's what u pay for the great comfort & easiness.
2. alas...if u hv printed a GRD image up to 24" with a top-quality printer & compare that with a $5,000 DSLR kit set, u'll be amazed by GRD's outstanding performance.
then the difference of $1,000 is worth every penny spent. AND what's the point of getting all those ACCESSORIES when u cud not get a better picture quality ???

1) Agree to the extent that if you think the extra $1,500 is worth comfort.
2) GRD's quality is not in dispute, but all things being equal, if you use a top quality printer to print out a G9 image, I think there is very little to choose between them.
3) Leaving the picture quality aside, which I think both G9 and GRD have their supporters, I think accessories like filters are a must for any aspiring photographers. With filters like gradual blue, I can make more contrast between the sky and landscape under strong daylight, GRD without filter under the same conditions will definitely come up short.
As said before, I think both are very good cameras and should satisfy 90% amatuer photographers. GRD II will definitely have its group of followers, but on a personal level, I have chosen G9.

fish 30d :
1. it’s not just comfort. But comfort & superb quality combined.
2. plus the joy along the way once u know how to control this wonderful little creature; &
3. that u can adjust everything with one hand without having to stop taking photos.
<if you use a top quality printer to print out a G9 image, I think there is very little to choose between them.>
4. Don’t “think”. Go CHECK! Check all the photos taken at low light situations. Check them at full size. Check the dark shade areas. Check the noise level & grain. Check the loss of details. Check the brimming edge. The top quality printer will magnify all your beauty & your flaws. In most cases, if not having horrendous noise, Canon G9 appears artificially “smooth”, like an “oil painting”. Definition is weak. Automatic noise reduction overdone.
In the recent issue of “PC Mag”, a study of lens & engine performance reveals G9 is no big improvement on G7 quality other than the gain in more pixels.
<I think accessories like filters are a must for any aspiring photographers.>
5. For any aspiring & REAL serious photographers, POST-PROCESSING is a true must.
In the pre-digital age, it’s the DARKROOM techniques. In the digital age, it’s the Photoshop or the alike & a very accurate color management scheme. You can get whatever filters u want then.
Post-processing helps u to express what are in your mind, not just what the light datas the camera engine has collected.
6. But, first & foremost, for real aspiring photographers, it’s your camera eye to see uniqueness in common everyday life, your aesthetic judgement, yr willingness to RISK when taking a pic, your depths &, if possible, your humour that truly matter.
7. Only an amateur would make a big fuss about “filters” an important factor to make a good photo !!!
And, in that sense, I respect your choice of G9 & therefore understand all your previous argument. : )

And what type of photographer are you, Muskara? Which printer do you use at home? What paper do you print your photo on? What size are your prints?

I bought G9 for the reasons I have mentioned above, but obviously Muskara has his own opinion.
