The situation is: Person face is dark, but background is bright, how can I take a photo on both subjects clearly? (more or less like a 背光相)

1. Tried using flash, but that just made the person clearer and the background became too white

2. Tried increasing EV, but same thing happens like using flash

3. Lower shutter speed- again, background extremely white and also problem with hand shake

4. High ISO- face was still dark

Please advise~

when i used flash to fill in the light for the face, the photo would be like i merge a portrait photo with a landscape photo. i.e. like superimposing two photos to produce one. it does not look natural. why? thanks.

Yes, when your people's face is backlit from behind, on day time you can use AV mode and meter your photo as usual and use external flash of EX series it have the High frequency sym mode, select it on the flash so that it can have a shutter speed even higher than 1/250" to syn with the flash but the flash output will be reduced.

an example may not be quite bright at the background but with f1.8 and 1/500" and flash with high syn also not by 400D by the theory behind are the same.

simply because their light source are different, the background take the ambient light while the people take the flash light.

Try to use a higher iso say 400 or reduce the flash output.

When you use higer iso on daytime the shutter speed may be higher than 1/250" then use the high syn mode on the external flash, if no external flash then reduce the built-in flash in your camera see the menu.

spot metering / CW metering on the background to get the exposure data
low ISO, small aperture if flash sync not high enough
use flash the lightening the face/body (by trial and error for flash GN output)

or

use 反光板 instead of flash but need to adjust exposure value (+ or -)

Most of the time, that's the "best" we can do with one speedlight aiming it directly at the face.

Just wondering, does all photographers always set the camera at the highest quality image (L)?

Commercial portrait studio shots are of very high quality.
These portrait photos are all shot under bright studio light !!!

In this sense bright light is a must for high quality portrait shots. Agree ?

2,3,4 都是全張相加減曝光, 對減低光差無幫助.

只要善用照明工具, 照明 暗的地方便可以

若可能的話 另覓地點, 時間 取其易者而影之 :;^-)

Try minus EV for the background and use flash to add light to the subject.

If you use internal flash, you should the lowest ISO available and use smaller aperture so that the shutter speed is below the max flash speed, i.e. 1/200s or 1/250s. Since the camera won't use higher shutter speed with internal flash, you will get an over exposed photo. Alternatively, as bb1032300 said, use an external flash with high speed sync mode so that a higher shutter speed like 1/500s or 1/1000s can be set.

You said using flash is like superimposing two photos together, it looks like there is too much flash. It is about flash control and you can use flash EV adjustment to correct it.
