今年五月我會和全家人到地中海旅行, 老父和在外國的哥哥都會一齊去, 但現面對買機的决擇, 請C兄比D意見.

我原本在舊年八月賣左部 Canon30D, 一心一意等買 5D MkII, 但一等就等左七個月, 5D MkII音訊全無, 五月之前出機無望! 我現在應買那部機去這畢生之旅? 選擇如下:

1) Canon 5D 二手;
2) Canon 5D 全新;
3) Canon 40D 二手;
4) Canon 40D 全新;
5) Canon 450D 全新

須要知道之後我一定會賣左以上之决定來換 5D MkII

我還有以下鏡頭: EF-S10-22mm; EF24-105mm F4L IS; EF70-200F4L IS; Canon 1.4x; 580EX, 所以買Nikon D300係無可能 :(

Depends on your budget and would you buy the new 5D mark II which will be available by Q3 this year.

I have 5D which I brought it June 07, very good and especailly for landscape photo, last Nov I went to Japan and borrow the 12-24 Sigma from my friend and it is excellent for 5D as it is a REAL 12mm.

No others can compare with this wide except fisheye. If you have 10-22, and will buy the new 5D mark II than I think 450D will be a good choice for you. It is a cheap backup for your 5D mark II and use your 10-22 will become REAL 16mm good enough without buying a new lens and adding the 24-105 you can cover most of the situations you need during your trip. I brought my 5D + 12-24 + 24-105 to Japan very happy with this combination plus a flash and tripod. Well, I also think a built-in flash for 5D is a good thing for fill-in.

40D will have iso 3200, faster fps, liveview, similar control like 30D and 1/3 increment in iso setting, 1/8000", the best AF among all non-1series bodies all up to you.

I don't think you will be happy only with any one of the APS-C body given you want the 5D mark II, so I will suggest you to buy 450D and wait for the new 5D mark II. Actually, 5D is a legend in terms of high iso low noise as I think 12M is optium for a full frame sensor more pixels simiply too much.

Thank you bb1032003 for the advice, and nice photos BTW.

I am inclined to buy a 2nd hand 40D for the trip, and sell it when 5D MkII comes out. That way, I think at most I will only loss $1,000-1,500 and I can also use my EF-S10-22 (16-35mm equivalent), which, like you said, is ideal for landsacpe.

But 5D, being such a nice camera and I do have the 24-105L, I am just wondering if the resale value for the 5D will be better than the 40D.

Although I have seen your pics before, the impact of 12mm is still very large even when revisiting the pics. I almost want to get EFS 10-22 for my 40D so that i can try ultra wide angle for landscape during my upcoming trip. The main concern is not so much on buying as on carrying another lens. Anyway, I really enjoy your pics. The impact of the bridge in the second photo is really amazing.

I have no problem with dark corners. Some people even add dark corners by using software, probably for imitating film photos.

Some people said when using 17-40 f4L on ff body, the edge is a bit soft even at f8 or f11 with 17mm. Is it true?

I don't mind dark corners at all, actually I quite like them to add a feel of tension. You can easily remove them by software if you want.

I think more or less similar for 40D and 5D when resale, given the 40D will be around one year old when the 5D mark II issue. 5D will also drop when 5D mark II arrived. It depends whether you prepare to have a backup body.

Actually, I am quite enjoy the dark corner given it is not urgly and that create the kind of impression and tension that the view is so wide. It will be a tough decision for you if you are going to buy the 5D mark II in future, the EF-S 10-22 is definitely a good lens but can't be use on FF, if I were you I will buy the Sigma 10-20 as this can be used on both 40D and 5D mark II, but if you are so despite for a ultra wide angle go for it but remember you already have the 17-40 when it is on 5D mark II equal to 40D + 10-22.

With regard to the 17-40 on 5D, another old photo for your own eyes.

Tks again bb1032003. Like you said, I may keep the 40D as back up when 5D MkII arrives. I am surprised that 2nd hand 5D is still selling at $12,000, which is almost $4,000 more than a new 40D!

For your 5D, there is no dust removal mechanism. Do you clean the sensor regularly?

No, I just clean it once by my self, actually it is not that difficult and dry clean with lens pen is ok. You can't reach the sensor directly as there is a low-pass filter in front of it, you actually just clean the filter. However, wet clean will be more dangerious as liquid will go into the circuit, so I won't do a wet clean on my own.

If you are carefull enough during change lens or even not to change lens so frequent you can reduce the chance of dust. I have more than one body so I can reduce the no. of lens change.
