Its very easy, brief steps as below:

1. Download the software from http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/eos40d/eos40d-firmware-e.html, and save at somewhere.

2. Copy the saved application to a formatted CF card, by using the card reader or other means.

3. Insert the formatted CF card into the card slot, select "P" or other mode under creative zone. Power on, select firmware ver under Camera User Setting, press Set, then follow the instructions...Done
