You can buy a kit lens for around $600 2nd hand, $4,400 for 30D 2nd hand, I bet you the picture quality is streets ahead of 1000D

Just come back from Tokyo today ... the camera (Kiss F) was just released on 27 June. Costs Yen 69,000 for body only. At Yodobashi, the Kiss x2 (450D) body costs Yen 74,000. I would prefer 450D instead. Don't know the official price in HK yet.
