To start, understand the following trends.
Nikon D90 better than Nikon D80, but Nikon D100 even better than Nikon D90.
Canon 500D better than Canon 450D, but Canon 600D even better than Canon 500D.
Sony A400 better than Sony A300, but Sony A500 even better than Sony A400.
So Nikon D100 better than Canon 450D and Sony A300
So Canon 600D better than Nikon D80 and Sony A300
But not sure if Sony A400 would be better than Nikon D80 and Canon 450D....!

Okay, just kidding.
I think for newbie or DSLR beginners, Canon EOS 450D is better, and is surely a safe bet. I think Canon EOS 450D has a much better menu layout and the control setting. The noise at higher ISO at 400, 800 and even 1600 of Canon is also better than Sony. It's also the lightest and smallest among 3. But if you have big hands, this may be a minus instead of a plus. It's got decent speed of contiuous shooting at 3.5 fps too. It's got live view function, which D80 does not.
NIKON

Nikon D80 is a good camera, but is already 2 years since its release in 2006, and its successor D90 has just been released which has got a lot of new features, incl. the unique video function, but would be priced at nearly $10,000 mark. The up-side of D80 is finer ISO setting at 1/3 steps jump, i.e. ISO 100, then 125, then 160, then 200, then 250, then 320, then 400; instead of 450D's "100/200/400" jump.
But I definitely won't recommend the more recent D60, if you are a serious photographer, even amateur. D60 has only 3 focus point, and this would be inconvenient in your composition. D60 does not have a ISO button, so you have to enter the menu to adjust the ISO every time. Just these 2 weaknesses are enough to kill this one.
SONY

Sony A300 offers one of the most competitive package, in terms of pricing. But the choice of lenses, esp. if you want to use substitute lenses of Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina, would be rather limited.
CONCLUSION

So if I were to choose one all over again, I would still go for Canon 450D. But Nikon D80 is a very close 2nd choice. D90 would actually be even better specification-wise, but at a higher price, and heavier and bigger camera overall.
Of course, the choice is yours to make, so if you find Nikon D80 a good one to have, go for it. It is after all not bad, but I think Canon 450D has a better overall balance.
